The technique for water propagation of cactus is pretty similar to that of other house plants. However the main difference is that you must wait for the cut side of the plant stem to completely dry and scar over before setting it in water. This takes at least a week, sometimes more depending on the weather.
You should also ensure the leaves of your succulent stay dry, or they might rot. To suspend them over water, use your germination plate. The stem will root safely in the water and the leaves or top of the cactus will stay dry.

If you want, you can repot your cuttings in soil once they have sufficient roots, just make sure you keep the soil quite moist in the beginning, and use soil specifically made for cactus and succulents. Use a pot that has proper drainage, and don’t leave water standing in the saucer after waterings.
Cactus plants are sun-loving creatures and will get too tall and lanky if they don’t receive enough light. Set them in the spotlight!
